The University of Alabama at Birmingham will field a football team in 2017. In December, UAB President Ray Watts announced the university was shutting down its football program and two other sports because of finances, but that led to a community-wide backlash that ended with an announcement in June that they would bring it back, potentially for the 2016 season.
