
Fewer Americans than expected filed new claims for unemployment benefits last week, Reuters reported early Thursday, citing U.S. Department of Labor data. Initial state unemployment benefit claims rose by 3,000 to 270,000, seasonally adjusted, for the week ended Aug. 1. Economists had predicted claims would grow to 273,000.
